University of Louisiana at Lafayette Foundation Master Plan

In working with the UL Foundation on their existing building renovations, Abell + Crozier was asked to design a campus master plan which would establish a vision for their campus moving forward. The main building, located on the corner of East St. Mary Blvd. and West TAft Street was identified as the cornerstone building on the site. The Foundation also holds interest in the University Art Museum across the street, which includes both a traditional A. Hays Town

designed building and the modern Paul and Lulu Hilliard University Art Museum annex building. The challenge was how we were going to make the campus on two different lots across the street from each expansion building would face East St Mary Blvd., echoing the architecture of the University Art Museum side of the campus. Additional parking for both facilities is planned for the interior of the campus, with a layout that minimizes the visual impact of the parking lot.
Old growth live oaks were kept in place with development of the site occurring between the trees. Our solution involved the design of a linear plaza which would cross St. Mary Blvd., changing the walking surface material on the road as a visual cue connector. A twin fountain, matching the existing fountain at the Art Museum, is the featured terminus on the new portion of the plaza, along with a century live oak. A traditional addition to the main building would face West Taft Street, and a modern
