Greater Baton Rouge Rehabilitation Hospital

Location: Baton Rouge, Louisiana

After completing a brief architectural programming and master planning phase, the work began on a new 20 bed rehabilitation hospital in the Baton Rouge area for Highland Healthcorp, LLC. The site is located among other new healthcare facilities intending to form a medical campus. The building aesthetic was to incorporate the more contemporary feel of the campus, but not portray an institutional feeling. The owner’s business model demanded large patient rooms that take on a much more residential environment.
The main design concepts were attention to both the patient and the patient’s family as it relates to comfort, safety, accessibility and privacy. This was accomplished by using detailed millwork that incorporated writing surfaces, drawers and wardrobes, built in TV’s, refrigerators, and Murphy beds.
As with most rehab hospitals, the location of all support spaces were considered in their relationship to the nurses station. Visual control, staff connectivity and patient safety were all considered.
The administration and out-patient functions are located in the front of the hospital and, are connected to the in-patient areas via a secure corridor. The separation of the functions allowed the use of natural light adding to the relaxing and soothing atmosphere.
